Too young for Niseko?

Although you should keep age and mobility in mind when planning to bring the younger kids, with a bit of forward planning almost anything is possible.

Infants and toddlers (1–2 years): Bringing the littlest? A little tricky as ski schools usually limit entry to 3 years old. But if you want to get on the hill too it is still possible, especially if you arrange a babysitting service in advance with a provider such as Niseko Kids Club. Keep location in mind when booking accommodation too as prams aren’t often practical in the snow and ski in ski out will make swapping out a breeze. Under two's are a little more of a challenge in Niseko but certainly doable with a little extra planning.

Preschoolers (3–5 years): The age when everything gets easier including ski trips! Most ski schools accept children from age 3 and purpose-built magic carpet learning areas mean that getting started on skis is nice and easy no matter what age. The combination of great facilities, excellent instructors and soft forgiving snow make Niseko a great choice.

Primary school age (6–12 years): More fun than you can shake a pole at. Kids progress quickly on the mountain and can access the full range of ski and snowboard programs. Group lessons are super social and great fun and at the end of the week parents may find themselves fighting to keep up! Endless powdery snowballs included!

Teenagers: Niseko has more than enough mountain to keep teens ripping with 4 different resorts, terrain parks and night skiing. Check out the beginner and intermediate parks at both Hirafu and Hanazono with rails, tables, boxes and plenty more to keep them progressing. 

Alternative Activities

Here for a short trip and only planning to ski a day or two or just need a day off the skis? There's plenty of ways to fill in a day or two without even riding the lifts!

Snow Tubing at Hanazono

One of the most popular family activities at Hanazono, the tube park features dedicated lanes and a magic carpet to take the effort out of the climb back up. There's a separate, gentler lane specifically for children. Sessions run approximately 60 minutes and are suitable for all ages.

Niseko Village Kids Club 

Offer Montessori-inspired childcare for children aged 1.5–9 at Niseko Village, with multilingual coaches running daily themed sessions covering creative arts, STEM, cultural learning, and snow play. Half-day, full-day, and premium (with ski/snowboard lesson) packages are available. 

Snow Rafting

Available through Hanazono and other operators, snow rafting involves being pulled behind a snowmobile in a rubber boat while the guide swoops left and right across the snow. Thrilling without being frightening, it's a favourite with children who aren't yet skiing and parents who want an activity the whole group can share.

Snow Shoe Tours

Various operators in Niseko offer snow shoe tours to beautiful locations in the area many with lunch included. No experience needed and most will accept ages 6 and up.

Ice Cream

Even in -10 it goes down a treat! Milk Kobo is a great pace to visit for parents and kids a like, souvenir shopping, delicious treats and Hokkaido soft serve ice cream!

Disneyland and Disney Sea

Not in Niseko but throw a trip to one of these on your way into or out of Tokyo and you have a family holiday the kids will never forget and be begging to repeat!      

Top Tips for Niseko Family Visits

Book lessons early. Peak weeks book out early especially group lessons.

Rent equipment in Niseko. Children's ski gear is heavy and travel is way easier without it. Niseko has a wide range of excellent rental options including shops like Rhythm that stock a good range for kids.

Don’t miss the bus!  Keep in mind getting dressed and travel times to the resort and if you want to walk, the closer your accommodation is to the lifts the better. For those further away the free shuttle is an excellent option and the service is improving every year.
